We hope you never need this — but knowing it ahead of time is part of being a responsible dog parent, and we want you prepared. Canyon Pet Hospital is our first recommendation — and it's a particularly meaningful one. Canyon Pet Hospital is the organization behind the Canyon Animal Care Foundation, which is the charitable beneficiary of the Barks & Brews Pup Crawl. The same people putting on the event we're rallying around are also there for your dog in an emergency. And they're conveniently located near the Americana Motor Hotel.
Additional tip: Before you leave home, take a photo of your dog's vaccination records and save your regular vet's after-hours number in your phone. A little prep goes a long way.
What are the Flagstaff leash laws — exactly?
Every dog must be on a physical leash at all times in public — no exceptions outside of designated off-leash areas. Here's the exact language from Flagstaff City Code, Title 6 (Police Regulations):
"Every person owning or having charge, care, custody or control of any dog of any age shall keep such dog exclusively upon his or her own premises; provided, however, that the dog may be off such premises if it is under the control of a competent person and restrained by a chain, leash, rope or cord of sufficient strength to contain and control such dog."
In practical terms: 6-foot leash maximum in all public areas including downtown, the Courthouse plaza, city trails, and park common areas. The only exceptions are the fenced off-leash areas at Bushmaster Dog Park and the Americana "Barkyard."
What if my dog gets lost or there's an animal emergency?
Save these numbers in your phone before you leave home:
If your dog goes missing, act fast — notify Animal Control immediately, post to local Flagstaff Facebook groups, and ask hotel staff for help. The Golden Rush community will also rally — that's what this herd does.
🛍️ Official Golden Rush Gear
Is there an Official Golden Rush Store?
From apparel to accessories, everything in the store is designed to celebrate the Golden Rush community and the weekend we're building together. Whether you want something to wear in Flagstaff or just want to rep the herd year-round — we've got you. Bandanas will be available to purchase on site $20 via QR code. A very limited number of shirts (none with this years logo) will be available to purchase. $20 cash (exact change) or $25 via QR code.
We don't discriminate against "honorary Goldens" — siblings and friends are welcome! As long as they're well-socialized and love a crowd, they're part of the herd.
Do I need a ticket to participate?
The Golden Rush itself is completely free to attend — no ticket, no registration fee, no cover charge. However, the Barks & Brews Pup Crawl — our anchor event — does have a ticket price: $50 - don't drink? Don't drink? You don't need to participate in the crawl to walk with the group — and we encourage a direct donation to Canyon Animal Care Foundation in that case.

🚗 Getting Around Flagstaff
Where should I park downtown?
Flagstaff uses the ParkFlag program. Heads up — parking rates increased to $2/hour. Download the Flowbird App before you arrive to pay and extend your time remotely without running back to the meter. On weekends, many City and County lots (look for the "P" signs) may offer free or reduced parking — check ParkFlag.org for current lot details closer to October. Give yourself extra time — downtown fills fast when the herd is in town!
Pro tip: Uber Pet runs about $14 from the Americana and takes only 6 minutes. No parking stress, no meters — see the Uber question above. 🐾
🌤️ Weather & Logistics
What's the weather like in early October?
Arguably the best time of year in the mountains! Expect t-shirt weather during the day (average high around 68°F) and a crisp hoodie-vibe in the evenings (average low around 36°F). Fall color is starting to show in the aspens — it's stunning. Important: the sun is stronger at 7,000 feet — bring sunscreen and plenty of water for you and your Golden. Pack a warm layer for the evenings!
What if it rains?
We go rain or shine! A little mountain mist just makes the Goldens look more majestic (and maybe a little like wet noodles). Pack a light layer and embrace the mountain weather.
