What to Bring to Barks & Brews Pup Crawl: Flagstaff Edition

Flagstaff is famous for two things: world-class craft beer and four-legged mountain companions. Combine the two, and you get the ultimate high-country weekend event — the Barks & Brews Pup Crawl.

While our local patio scene is famously welcoming, crawling from taproom to taproom with a dog on a leash requires a little strategy. To make sure you and your pup have a seamless, stress-free day, success comes down to one thing: preparation.

Here is the unwritten playbook and essential gear guide for brewery hopping at 7,000 feet. Looking for items? Check out my Amazon list of items for the weekend!

1. Pack Like You’re Hiking the Peaks (Patio Gear Checklist)

Treat a pup crawl the same way you’d treat a day on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System — come fully stocked so you’re never caught off guard.

🎒 The "Pup Crawl" Pack Essentials:

  • The "Place" Mat or Outdoor Blanket: Cold concrete, hot pavers, or gravel patios aren't comfortable for long stretches. Bringing a light travel bed gives your dog a familiar target to lie down and relax.

  • Collapsible Water Bowl: Patios like Mother Road Brewing Company on Mikes Pike keep water stations handy, but having your own means your dog doesn't have to wait in line during peak patio hours.

  • High-Value Distractions: While you enjoy a cold Tower Station IPA, keep your pup occupied with a long-lasting chew, a stuffed KONG, or yak cheese stick.

  • Pocket-Sized Training Treats: Busy breweries mean lots of distractions (french fries, other dogs, loud acoustic music). High-value treats help reward good choices and keep your dog focused on you.

  • Double the Waste Bags: Always carry more than you think you need. Accidents happen, and keeping patios spotless keeps Flagstaff venues dog-friendly for everyone.

  • Fixed 4–6 Foot Leash: Leave the retractable flexi-leash at home. A sturdy, standard leash gives you maximum control around tight seating and busy server pathways.

2. Hydrate for High Altitude

High-altitude craft beer packs a punch for humans, but thin mountain air and sunny patio weather dry out dogs just as fast.

  • The Rule: Offer your pup water at every single stop before you sit down and order your own pint. If they've been walking in the sun between breweries, let them rest and rehydrate in the shade first.

3. Master the Secure "Station"

Flexi-leashes and crowded patio tables are a recipe for knocked-over IPAs and tangled table legs. Keep your dog's leash short enough that they can comfortably lie under or right beside your table.

  • Safety Tip: Secure the leash around your waist or a immovable post. Never anchor a leash to a light metal patio table or an umbrella pole — one sudden dart toward a squirrel crossing Route 66 can send glass and metal flying.

4. Respect the "Four Paws on the Floor" Rule

Even if your pup is small enough to fit on a chair or bench, local health regulations require four paws on the patio ground. This is where your portable mat shines — it creates a designated "stay spot" that keeps venue owners happy and your dog cozy.

5. Check Their "Social Battery"

Pup crawls are full of high energy: clinking glasses, new dogs around every corner, and enthusiastic strangers wanting to say hi.

  • Know the Signs: Watch for subtle stress cues like excessive yawning, lip licking, panting, or turning away.

  • Take a Breather: If your dog seems overwhelmed, step away from the crowd for a quiet 10-minute stroll down a nearby side street to reset before moving to the next brewery.

The Golden Rule: Preparation keeps the vibe relaxed. Gear up, keep your pup comfortable, grab a cold local brew, and enjoy celebrating Flagstaff’s amazing dog-loving community!
