Pet Food StorageSo I read something interesting recently: do you pour your dog or horse feed straight into a plastic storage bin? Turns out that's not the best idea. The FDA actually recommends keeping pet food in its original bag — and if you use a storage bin, put the whole bag inside it rather than dumping the food in loose. A few reasons why: Fat residue builds up on the walls of plastic bins over time and can turn rancid between refills, contaminating whatever fresh food you add next. Some plastics also let chemical additives migrate into fatty foods faster than the plastic used in food bags is designed to. And if you toss the original bag, you lose the UPC, lot number, and "best by" date — info you'd need if there's ever a recall. Vet nutritionists (Tufts' Cummings Veterinary Medical Center among them) call this the "bag-in-bin" method: keep the food sealed in its original bag, then place the whole bag inside an airtight container. Best of both worlds — freshness plus no direct contact with the bin. That's exactly why I switched: new containers made to hold the bags themselves, still sealed, instead of pouring food in loose. 🐴🐕 Here's my Amazon list of storage containers that you can put the whole bag into: https://www.amazon.com/shop/calvinandho06/list/2EMQZ1C3VA3ME?ref_=aipsflist Sources:
